If you’re struggling with knee pain, you’re not alone. Millions of American adults suffer from the condition, which can have a variety of causes. Whether your knee pain is mild or severe, it can seriously affect your mobility and your quality of life. But what is the best way to treat your condition? At Ortho Injury and Wellness Center in Lithonia, GA, our cold laser therapy sessions have helped many patients with their knee pain.
The Causes of Knee Pain
Knee pain is usually a symptom of an underlying condition. Disorders like arthritis, fibromyalgia, and neuropathy are common culprits. These ailments can create inflammation in the joints, causing swelling and discomfort. Knee pain can also be the result of a sports or auto-related injury. If not treated properly, an injury can develop into a chronic condition.
Cold Laser Therapy Explained
While the name ‘cold laser therapy’ can conjure a mental image of brightly colored lights, the actual treatment is quite mild. The technique, also called low-level laser therapy (LLLT), involves the use of light therapy that is meant to stimulate cell regeneration in the affected areas.
The energy produced by cold laser therapy penetrates beneath the muscles, allowing the treatment to focus on the source of your pain. Cold laser therapy has been proven to reduce inflammation, lower oxidative stress, and calm swelling.
How It Works
The process of cold laser therapy is safe and non-invasive. Using a small handheld tool, our in-house registered nurse practitioner, Laquay Jones, will apply light in varying wavelengths to whichever section of your knee is causing you pain. Depending on the area and severity of your pain, the tool may be applied to the affected area for anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes.
Most of our patients can begin to feel the benefits of cold laser therapy in as little as 1 or 2 sessions. More severe knee pain can require 3-8 sessions before the patient notices an improvement.
We also have other knee pain treatments available that pair well with cold laser therapy, like chiropractic care, physical rehabilitation, shock therapy and regenerative cell therapy.
